Graveyard Keeper 2 Coal

Updated 2026-09-29 · Searched as “graveyard keeper 2 coal”

Short answer

Coal is not sold by any trader and no bench crafts it from wood. It comes from a Zombie Miner in the Old Mine, which needs the mine opened with Dynamite and the Zombie Mining technology (60 red, 10 blue). The Smithy then needs Coal for Iron Ingots, Bricks, Glass and more — without it the Factory's smithing stops.

Where Coal comes from

Community databases agree on one source: a zombie working a Zombie Miner in the Forest (Old) Mine.

wikily.gg lists the miner turning 1 Iron Ore into 2 Coal per 8-tick shift; graveyardkeeper2.io describes each shift as bringing up 2 Coal and an Iron Ore. Either way, the miner is the coal source.

With the Magpie's Eye perk the shift has a 10% chance of a Gem as well.

Why you cannot buy it

No trader sells Coal and none buys it, so there is no shortcut through the shops.

That makes opening the mine a hard progression gate for anything that smelts.

Opening the mine

The mine sits in the Forest on the road to Hans's camp. Its entrance is blocked until you finish Can't See The Forest for the Iron: give Larry a Simple Candle, collect the bandits' Dynamite and clear the entrance with Building mastery 8.

Our mine guide walks through each step.

Zombie Mining and the Zombie Miner

Research Zombie Mining (60 red, 10 blue, after Iron Smithing). It unlocks the Zombie Miner and the Porter Station.

Place the miner at the mine's Blueprint Desk for 2 Wooden Plank and 4 Brick. Its task needs only mastery 1, and each shift pays the zombie 1 red tech point.

Add a Porter Station zombie to carry the output back to base.

Dynamite clears the mine entrance, Zombie Miners produce iron ore, and a Porter Station zombie carries it back to base.

Original summary of the mine route: clear the entrance, staff Zombie Miners, carry the output home with a porter. Not an in-game screen.

Bricks before Coal

The miner needs Bricks, and one brick recipe needs Coal — but you are not stuck.

The Kiln fires 6 Brick from 4 Clay and 10 Fuel with the Brick Making technology, and the Builder sells Bricks for about 10 bronze each.

What needs Coal

At Smithy I: Iron Ingot (1 Iron Ore + 1 Coal), Brick (2 Clay + 1 Coal makes 2), Glass (3 Sand + 1 Coal), Tableware and Glass Containers.

At Smithy II: Clay Molds and Lens, which takes 2 Coal.

Without Coal a Smithy can still hammer ingots into Iron Kits, but it cannot smelt, fire bricks and glass, or make the Clay Molds its castings need.

Fuel is not Coal

Furnaces and the Kiln burn Fuel units, which come from firewood. Recipes that list Coal want the Coal item itself.

If a station says it lacks fuel, fix the Firewood Shed — our kiln fuel guide covers that. If a recipe lacks Coal, only the mine will help.

Alchemy and research

Coal carries 1 red and 2 green runes and appears in many alchemy mixes, including Rich Growth Elixir.

Studying it once costs 2 Science and 2 Faith and pays +20 red and +10 green tech points.
