Short answer
The Philosopher Stone is an alchemy brew whose runes must total exactly 3 red, 3 green and 3 blue. Every valid mix uses three ingredients, so you need Laboratory II. A free mix is Beeswax + a three-star Brain + Copper Nugget. Spend it at the Formulation Bench on an Iron Ingot, which gives a whole Golden Ingot at Anatomy mastery 8. Using it on Iron Ore gives just one Golden Nugget.

Unlock it first
The stone and both of its Formulation Bench recipes are revealed by the technology Alchemy, Advanced, which costs 200 red and 100 blue tech points.
Until then you can still hit the rune total by accident, but you will not see the stone listed as a product.
Our alchemy guide explains how rune totals work and why the match must be exact.
Why Laboratory I greys it out
Nine runes is the largest formula in the game. No two ingredients reach it, and community databases count 432 combinations, all of them three ingredients.
Laboratory I has only two slots. The Folio still lists the stone as craftable there, but the brew button stays inactive and the game gives no reason.
Build Laboratory II for the third slot. That is the only fix.
Mixes that work
Beeswax (1 red, 2 green) + Brain (3 blue at three stars) + Copper Nugget (2 red, 1 green). All three come from your own beehive, corpses and a copper vein, so this costs nothing.
Beeswax + Cheese + a three-star Heart is another listed mix, but Cheese is scarce: one guide says only two quests hand it out.
Other reported mixes include Alcohol + Golden Nugget + Beeswax and Copper Nugget + Alcohol + Beeswax.
Discovering a formula saves the exact combination you used as the repeatable craft, so brew the cheap set first on purpose.
Transmuting iron into gold
Iron Ingot + Philosopher Stone → Golden Ingot. Formulation Bench, Anatomy mastery 8.
Iron Ore + Philosopher Stone → Golden Nugget. Formulation Bench, Anatomy mastery 6.
The stone is consumed either way. A Golden Ingot normally takes 3 nuggets at the furnace, so the ore recipe wastes most of the stone. Wait for mastery 8 if you can.
Our gold guide covers the other nugget sources and the furnace smelt.
Sell it, study it or keep it
Its listed base price is 5,000 and a Golden Ingot's is 10,000, so transmuting an ingot roughly doubles the value. Community testing reports real sale prices well below those tooltips once a trader's shelf already holds stock.
The Alchemist stocks the stone from his third trader level.
Each brew pays 3 red, 3 green and 3 blue tech points on top of the item, the most of any single mix. Studying one at the Study Table costs 20 Science, pays 50 red, 30 green and 25 blue, and does not use up the stone.
Values were checked against community item databases on October 18, 2026; they may change with patches.
