Short answer
Alchemy recipes require an exact combination of red, green and blue runes. Add each ingredient’s three values separately, then compare every color with the target. A matching total still needs the formula’s technology and enough laboratory ingredient slots. This reference compares four commonly needed formulas.

Read the totals, not just the ingredient name
Rich Growth Elixir is a useful first example: Berry contributes one green rune, while Beeswax adds one red and two green. Together they reach one red, three green and zero blue. Coal can replace Beeswax in this pair.
Treat each color as a separate column. An extra blue rune does not substitute for a missing green one. If a mix fails, check the actual rune values on the items you selected before changing the quantity.
Rich or Miracle Growth Elixir?
Rich requires 1 red / 3 green / 0 blue and Fertilizers III. Berry with Beeswax is a two-ingredient option; Laboratory I is sufficient. Use the Rich Growth Elixir guide for its fertilizer recipes.
Miracle requires 1 red / 5 green / 0 blue and Fertilizers IV. Pumpkin with Beeswax works in Laboratory I. Powder with Beeswax also works when the powder itself has exactly three green runes; the item name alone does not specify that variant.
Rich feeds tier-II fertilizers; Miracle feeds Farming Fertilizer III. Choose your intended fertilizer first so that you do not spend ingredients on the wrong formula.
Third Eye Salt: a different color target
Third Eye Salt needs 1 red / 0 green / 5 blue and the Transmutation I unlock. Laboratory I or II can make it.
The formula reference lists Alcohol with Firefly as a two-item mix. Follow the Third Eye Salt guide for the mastery effect and the Firefly guide for ingredient sources.
Reanimation Liquid needs the third slot
Reanimation Liquid requires 2 red / 1 green / 4 blue and its own technology unlock. The documented ingredient combinations use Laboratory II.
Tin adds two red and one blue; Peat adds one green and one blue; Night flower adds two blue. Those three ingredients reach the target exactly.
Another listed combination is Copper Nugget with two Night flowers. A valid three-item total cannot be entered into a laboratory with only two ingredient slots.
Check a failed recipe in this order
First identify the intended formula: Rich, Miracle, Third Eye Salt and Reanimation Liquid have different targets. Next check its technology and laboratory requirement. Finally add the red, green and blue values independently, including the exact powder variant.
